VCAL
In 2004, Kooweerup Secondary College introduced the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) into its curriculum. Whilst initially available at the Intermediate level, which translates to Year 11, by 2005 VCAL had been expanded into three levels: Junior, Intermediate and Senior.
The College offers VCAL as a three day program at school, supported by one day in the workforce and one day of training (usually a VET subject) per week. Student study at school is focussed on Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development and Work Related Skills. VCAL classes are designed to appeal to students who have determined on a vocation that does not require university training.
The VCAL classes are very practically orientated and do not require the academic rigour of VCE. Students must be vocationally focussed and prepared to work as part of a team to achieve the required outcomes.
Entry to VCAL follows discussions between the student, parent, Careers Coordinator and the Senior School Coordinator.
